Encounter AR
Institutional Edition
Encounter at life-scale allows the viewer to explore its sculptural form in extreme detail, and with a high degree of immersion. It invites the viewer to lose themselves in the process of discovery, navigating a unique path through the sculpture each time it is experienced.
As the cars in the life-scale version are sized to match the scale of vehicles we regularly use, and the floating figures represent our own bodies with uncanny fidelity, the work’s one to one scale allows it to become our accident, our encounter.
In an institutional or spacious home setting, Encounter at life-scale has the advantage of allowing up to thirty people to view it simultaneously. Occlusion technology places viewers and bystanders in front of, or behind, the sculpture, adding to the sense of real-world presence. Enhancing this, the audio component, comprising a manipulated crash and vocal harmonics, provides a soundscape in which the sculpture floats.
Site-specific design also allows the life-scale piece to be designed intentionally for both interior and exterior spaces. In its first public viewing at MOCA London, for example, the majority of the piece appears inside the gallery space, while the rear of one vehicle appears to protrude through the gallery window — visible to anyone with a cellphone camera.
